One minor issue is that I seemed to lose my character during some of the more intense fights. An added bonus of playing with another player is that you can revive your partner. The option also allows player to locally drop in and out at any time no matter the save file. The game retains its difficulty even with the addition of a new player. There’s a co-op mode available that only makes the experience better. There are also a variety of different explosive weapons that can be found such as grenades and C4. ![]() There are a ton of different weapons to come across and the moment you think you found your favorite, you’ll find a new gun to mow down everything in sight. This forces you to make a decision and be conscious of your ammo. It’s all about the weapons in Huntdown. Weapons can be found scattered on the ground, but aside from your default gun, only one can be held at a time. Additionally, there are some areas full of powerful weapons, which tie in clever easter eggs that cyberpunk fans will catch. However, these aren’t just found in hidden walls, some briefcases are held by an escaping enemy who needs to be taken out before he gets away. Levels also consist of secrets that encourage you to return to find secret briefcases. It makes each stage a trial as you never really know what is going to be thrown at you. ![]() For example, a gang that loves cars will often have you fight against vehicles. There are several grunt enemies that will consistently appear throughout the game, but there are also unique enemy types that fit the theme of the levels. There is a level of difficulty within the game, but it isn’t unmanageable. However, the moment you try to wipe the drool from your face, dozens of enemies come rushing in for your head. Each level is full of cyberpunk aesthetic and oozing with amazing 16-bit craftsmanship. This team has done some amazing things with their backgrounds and environments that make you want to slow down just to take it all in. I don’t mean to gush too much, but the level designs in Huntdown deserves it. However, the developers are incredibly gracious with their checkpoints that take on the form of mobile hospitals. It’s a rush and dying comes naturally within the first hour of gameplay, up until the very last. Actions include sliding, taking cover behind objects, melee, and using whatever tools the environment provides you to make it out of alive. During stages, movement will keep you alive and the responsive controls allow you to take advantage of the character’s skills to receive minimal damage. However, they each handle relatively the same. Yes, the difficulty does increase, but after awhile your skills improve to become a gangster killing machine.Įach character has a different default gun, with unlimited ammo, and a secondary weapon. However, this limits any repetitious gameplay elements since the enemies are constantly changing. ![]() There’s no holding back here, you’ll be squaring off against some of the most insane gangsters that I have ever encountered. The levels are all themed differently depending on the gang you are fighting. The themes are influenced by elements of action movies from the 80s, which reference dialogue and a few set-pieces.Įach level consists of a handful of stages that end with a boss. As silly as it sounds, these characters take their jobs and the situation extremely seriously. Players assume the role of one of three bounty hunters who is tasked with cleaning up the streets of a corrupted city. Huntdown doesn’t waste too much time throwing you in the action, but it’s not afraid to set up a narrative. This action-packed presentation of explosion, death, and mayhem accumulates into an over-the-top adventure and I couldn’t put it down for a second. One developer who got things incredibly right is Easy Trigger Games in their newest title Huntdown. Now, things are a bit different, but developers seem to still hone in on what makes this genre so fun and addicting. To be honest, games like Metal Slug and Double Dragon took plenty of my quarters growing up, but it never stopped me from playing. We’ve come along way with the arcade 2D action genre.
